Helen is a social historian who specialises in the history, folklore and material culture of death, dying and bereavement. She undertakes historical consultancy work, including appearances on the History Channel and BBC Radio 4 discussing Victorian funerals. Current projects include a monograph on 'the moral economy of the Victorian folk funeral' and an oral history project on gravedigging. Meanwhile Helen's undergraduate History teaching experience broadly covers the emergence of a distinctively Western society, culture and identity since the fall of the Roman Empire. She has also been part of the cross-disciplinary teaching team on the Foundation Degree in Funeral Directing at the University of Bath, UK. As well as being a member of the ASDS Council, Helen sits on the Folklore Society Committee and is an elected member of the Royal Historical Society.
